Protecting Your Hair and Skin This Summer

June 20, 2016

During the Summer months, most people engage in long outdoor activities such as visiting beaches and amusement parks, attending barbecues, or just a fun day at the pool.  Skin and hair needs protection from the sun's harmful UV rays.  Although some UV radiation exposure is necessary for the production of Vitamin D, too much can be harmful.  Sunburn is a result of excessive exposure to UV radiation.  As a result of the overexposure, a person is more susceptible to pre-mature skin aging such as wrinkles and fine lines.  Skin cancer can also develop as a result to overexposure of UV radiation.  Not only does your skin needs protection from the sun, but also your hair.  If not properly protected, your hair becomes dry, brittle, and dull.  If your hair is color treated, the sun will change and fade the color.  Here are a few things you can do to protect your hair and skin from the sun.

  1. Use hair products that contain UV protection
  2. Apply sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher for maximal protection.
  3. Be sure to reapply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside.
  4. Re-apply sunscreen every two hours.
  5. Cover your hair with hats
  6. Spray your hair with water containing sunscreen.  This mixture can be achieved by mixing a half cup of water with a teaspoon of sunscreen.  Just as if you would reapply sunscreen to your skin after a few hours, you should also spray your hair with the mixture.
  7. Wear protective styles such as buns, twists, or braids.   It's even better if you pull your braids and twists into a bun.  This lessens the amount of hair that will have chances of becoming damaged.
  8. Distribute conditioner throughout your hair evenly and do not wash out until you return inside from the sun.  Not only will this help protect your hair from the sun, but it also protects your hair from chlorinated water, if you go swimming, and it acts as a deep conditioning treatment.
  9. Use a leave-in conditioner on your hair
