Washing your hair too often is not a good idea because water will dry your hair out. That is one of the biggest misconceptions. Water is actually the best pure moisturizer for your hair, unless the water you use is hard water. Water is used to refresh your hair and keep it hydrated. The reason why some people may suffer from dry hair due to daily washing is because they do not properly care for their hair afterwards. When hair is washed with shampoo, it's natural oils are stripped.
Although oil does not moisturize hair, it is needed to lock in moisture (water), that keeps your hair from becoming dry. I don't recommend using oil on dry hair because it does not allow water to be absorbed into the hair . Instead, add oil to your hair once it's wet because it helps seal the hair, keeping the water in.

I've recently started to only wash my hair with conditioner, that contains natural oils such as jojoba oil and coconut oil. It helps remove any smell or product build up, in my hair, instead of using a shampoo, that generally strips the hair completely of oils. Once the conditioner is rinsed out, I add sweet almond oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil, to my wet hair. I only wash my hair with conditioner once a week; and every two days, I re-wet my hair and add a small amount of oil. I was my hair with shampoo, to remove egg residue, from a protein treatment and when I sstraighten my hair, so that the oils won't weigh my hair down.
How often you want to wash your hair is a personal the decision. The main concern is caring for your hair properly, after washing it and on a daily basis.
